BOS & CHoCH Explained
These two concepts form the backbone of modern price action analysis. Learn them well.
Break of Structure (BOS)
A BOS confirms trend continuation. It occurs when price breaks beyond the most recent swing point in the direction of the trend.
Bullish BOS
- In an uptrend, price breaks above a previous swing high
- Confirms buyers are still in control
- Creates a new higher high (HH)
Bearish BOS
- In a downtrend, price breaks below a previous swing low
- Confirms sellers are still in control
- Creates a new lower low (LL)
Change of Character (CHoCH)
A CHoCH signals a potential trend reversal. It occurs when price breaks against the prevailing trend direction.
Bearish CHoCH (from uptrend)
- Price fails to make a new HH
- Then breaks below the most recent HL
- First sign that buyers may be losing control
Bullish CHoCH (from downtrend)
- Price fails to make a new LL
- Then breaks above the most recent LH
- First sign sellers may be losing control
BOS vs CHoCH — The Key Difference
| | BOS | CHoCH | |---|-----|-------| | Direction | With the trend | Against the trend | | Meaning | Continuation | Potential reversal | | Action | Look for trend entries | Wait for confirmation | | Confidence | High (trend aligned) | Medium (needs follow-through) |
How to Trade Them
Trading BOS (Continuation)
- Identify the trend using HH/HL or LH/LL
- Wait for a pullback to a key zone (demand/supply)
- After the pullback, look for a BOS on a lower timeframe
- Enter with stop below the swing low
Trading CHoCH (Reversal)
- Spot the CHoCH on your analysis timeframe
- Mark the supply/demand zone that caused the CHoCH
- Wait for a retest of that zone
- Enter on a lower-timeframe confirmation (e.g., engulfing candle)
- Tighter stops, smaller position (reversal = higher risk)
Common Mistakes
- Labeling every small fluctuation as a BOS — only count significant swing points
- Trading CHoCH in isolation without waiting for retest confirmation
- Ignoring higher-timeframe trend when trading LTF BOS
Key Takeaway
BOS = trend fuel. CHoCH = trend warning. Both require context from the higher timeframe to be meaningful.
